A Word From Marie S., QIAA Institutions Chair
Hi!
I've recently been elected as your Queens Intergroup
Institutions Chairperson; also newly elected to the office is
my co-chair Katie L.  As your trusted servants, Katie and I
will work with hospitals, detoxes, rehabs, shelters, nursing
homes, and correctional facilities in Queens to ensure that
the message of recovery is carried to the sick and suffering
alcoholics in these institutions through AA meetings and
literature supplied by QIAA.
But we cannot do it without our fellow AA members who
volunteer their time to run meetings, in coordination with
AA's 12 Traditions and the institution's policies.
An institutions commitment is much like a commitment in
your home group, but without the occasional lengthy
business meeting!  If the chairperson is unable to find a
speaker, they share their own experience, strength and
hope.  It is often very informal and the institution provides
the space & some amenities for the meeting that are
conducive to helping the sick and suffering alcoholic.
There are many ways to chair a meeting in an institution.
AA's can take a meeting on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly
basis.  Often AA's will share a commitment, alternating
every other week.
Another great way is for your home group to "adopt" an
institution.  This type of commitment can be shared by
rotating group members on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly
basis.  It's almost like taking a speaking commitment at an
AA group except that you're taking it to an institution.
You may think that since you've never been in an institution
you'll have nothing to offer.  This is only half of the truth.
Remember that, "the only requirement for AA membership
is a desire to stop drinking."  This is our common ground
and the thread that unites us.  Sharing your experience,
strength and hope on how you have not picked up a drink
one day at a time is all that needs to be shared.  It's our
identification, not comparing, that helps us stay sober.
On the other hand, many alcoholics were first exposed to
AA through a hospital, detox, rehab, or jail.  If your
alcoholism landed you in such a place, was there an AA
meeting available to you?  If so, was the meeting the
highlight of your day?  Did it give you a bit of hope?  Did
you resent these meetings only to realize later that a seed
was planted?
In either case, your experience, strength and hope on how
you've stayed away from a drink "one day at a time" is all
you need!  Doing service in an institution is a great way for
a recovering alcoholic to stay sober, one day at a time, by
helping someone else. "You have to give it away to keep
it."
If you are interested in providing service at any of the open
institutions in Queens, please leave a 'phone message for
